A 5-a-side football field in the Italian city of Genoa has been converted into a 5-a-side hockey pitch.

According to Sergio Mignardi, President of the Italian Hockey Federation, ‘the new Italian federal policy has made 5-hockey the center of growth and development: the national Under 12 championship has existed since 2013/14; from 2016/17 there are also federal contributions to incentivize and reward; from 2017/18 it is even mandatory. A field with a synthetic turf is indispensable.’

Genoa Hockey 1980 responded to the request to provide adequate facilities for the development of the sport.

‘If the under 12’s is considered nationwide as a driving force for development of the game, it is in the five-field fields that this development must proliferate,’ argues Daniele Franza, president of the Genoa Hockey 1980. ‘We must overcome the mental laziness that wants hockey confined only in full-size hockey fields,’ he adds.

Limonta Sport, together with its local partner, completed the work of this first 5-a-side hockey, a novelty of which the Italian commercial director, Francesco Lavorato, is proud of.

‘Italy has various artificial grass football fields on which you can practice promotional hockey. But by converting these small fields into hockey specific fields like Genoa Hockey 1980 did, these soccer fields, the technical benefits are enormous,’ he explains.
